OMV Petrom, the Romanian leader in the production of hydrocarbons and fuels, has obtained the environmental permit for the construction of a new sustainable fuels plant at the Petrobrazi refinery. The project, dedicated to the production of environmentally-friendly diesel and aviation fuel from renewable resources, is an important step towards reducing carbon emissions and encouraging green energy in Romania’s transportation sector.
According to documents analyzed by Profit.ro, the new Petrobrazi plant will occupy an area of more than 3 hectares and will be located on the industrial platform of the OMV Petrom refinery. Designed to operate at full capacity under stable conditions, the production unit will have a daily capacity of 788 tons, equivalent to about 276,000 tons per year. The plant is planned to operate 350 days per year, totaling 8,400 operating hours. The production will use pre-treated renewable feedstocks such as used cooking oil and vegetable oil, both sustainable and environmentally friendly resources. This approach is in line with the global trend to reduce the use of fossil fuels in favor of low environmental impact alternatives. From these renewable feedstocks, the plant will produce two essential fuels for the transportation of the future: environmentally-friendly Green Diesel and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a key product in the green transition of the aviation industry, a sector known for its high carbon emissions. The use of this fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional fuels, which will make a significant contribution to achieving the environmental objectives set by Romania and the European Union. Green Diesel is also a greener alternative to conventional diesel, thus contributing to lower emissions in the automotive sector. With this new production facility, OMV Petrom strengthens its position in the sustainability and environmental efficiency efforts in the energy sector. The investment in this modern technology is an important step for the company, which aims to diversify its product portfolio by introducing greener and more environmentally responsible energy solutions. In the context of climate change and the stringent environmental policies being promoted globally, the Petrobrazi project is an example of aligning with the goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy. OMV Petrom is thus positioning itself as a leader in Romania’s energy transition, supporting both the national economy and environmental protection through innovative and responsible solutions. The OMV Petrom project at the Petrobrazi refinery marks a significant step forward in the adoption of sustainable energy in Romania and encourages the development of environmentally friendly solutions in the transportation sector. With this investment in renewable fuels, OMV Petrom is contributing to a cleaner and safer future for generations to come.
