In 2021, it accounted for\u00a037%\u00a0of all CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions from end\u2010use sectors.<\/p>\n<p>To gain insights into how different vehicle types contribute to these emissions, the above graphic visualizes the life cycle emissions of battery electric, hybrid, and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles using Polestar and Rivian\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kearney.com\/documents\/291362523\/295334577\/Polestar+and+Rivian+pathway+report-+supported+by+Kearney.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pathway Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]\n\t\t<div id=\"wd-64a615ba17755\" class=\"title-wrapper wd-wpb set-mb-s reset-last-child  wd-rs-64a615ba17755 wd-title-color-default wd-title-style-default text-left  wd-underline-colored\">\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<div class=\"liner-continer\">\n\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"woodmart-title-container title  wd-font-weight-600 wd-fontsize-xl\" >Production to Disposal: Emissions at Each Stage<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div id=\"wd-64a615c95b809\" class=\"wd-text-block wd-wpb reset-last-child wd-rs-64a615c95b809 text-left \">\n\t\t\t<p>Life cycle emissions are the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted throughout a product\u2019s existence, including its production, use, and disposal.<\/p>\n<p>To compare these emissions effectively, a standardized unit called metric tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0equivalent (tCO<sub>2<\/sub>e) is used, which accounts for different types of greenhouse gases and their global warming potential.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an overview of the 2021 life cycle emissions of medium-sized electric, hybrid and ICE vehicles in each stage of their life cycles, using tCO<sub>2<\/sub>e. According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/automotive-and-assembly\/our-insights\/the-race-to-decarbonize-electric-vehicle-batteries\">McKinsey &amp; Company study<\/a>, this high emission intensity can be attributed to the extraction and refining of raw materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel that are needed for batteries, as well as the energy-intensive manufacturing process of BEVs.<\/li>\n<li>Electricity production is by far the most emission-intensive stage in a BEVs life cycle.
